Fernand Schirren - Dimanche (S/Edition)

“Dimanche was supposed to be a didactic film, intended to evoke the problem of leisure. Bernhard diverts the order and outwits the trap of the ‘thematic’ film. Without resorting to any form of commentary, making use of extraordinary images sublimating common spaces (the boredom of Sundays, the changing of the guard, children playing, a runner in the woods, a football match, …), he constructs with a nifty montage an exceptional work dealing with the sense of void and the fossilisation of the world.” - Boris Lehman

about

Especially for the exhibition on Fernand Schirren at CINEMATEK in Brussels we present an edition of 5 lathe cut records with the original soundtrack of Schirren's sound piece for the film 'Dimanche' from 1963 by Edmond Bernhard.

Fernand Schirren was not only a composer, musician and indispensable rhythm teacher with Béjart and Anne-Teresa de Keersmaeker, he was also the main pianist who accompanied silent films at CINEMATEK from the founding of the Filmmuseum in 1962 until 1982, when he formed the pianist team that took care of the daily projections.

For 'Dimanche' Bernhard asked him not to provide a commentary on the ‘action’ and instead to create an atmosphere for it, but to still give this ‘action’ its own sonic dimension and to deliberately accentuate the rupture of the images that captured it. The result is stunning.

Only for sale from 14.12 at the exhibition itself.
